Roger Maris hit his league leading 12th homerun on May 9th, 1961. The other three hit two homeruns in their game that featured 9 homeruns and the second straight day that the Boston Red Sox scored 17 runs in a game. The lowely LA Angels were again the victums of the BoSox assault. In other games Washington split their double header with first place Detriot after scoring 11 runs in the 6th inning of the night cap to win it 12-4. Tigers won lid lifter 3-2 on a walk-off Al Kaline double. Yanks won, to go one game above .500...Whitey started but did not get the win. Cleveland beat the White Sox in a close game behind the complete game right handed slants of Jim Perry. Baltimore beat the Minnesota Twins in other league action.

Only one game in the Junior Circuit yesterday, Monday May 8th, 1961. In the game, Russ Nixon, from the Boston Red Sox, had four hits and knocked in 8 runs in the BoSox 17-4 win over the expansion LA Angels. "Nix" is hitting a cool .442 so far this season, with most of those 43 official at bats against right handed pitching.

The hotest pitcher in the Amercian League for 1961 is Jim "Mudcat" Grant. He just threw his third consecutive shutout white-washing the Washington Nats 4-0. It was the "Cats" fifth win of the season against zero defeats. In other action from Sunday May 7th, the Detroit Tigers took over sole possession of first place with a double header sweep of the previously in first place Chicago White Sox by the scores of 5-1 and 15-9. Other highlights were Roger Maris hitting his league leading 11th homerun for the Yankees, who find themselves looking up at five other clubs playing better then five hundred ball. With the victory the Yankees even their mark at ten and ten. Another power surge is found coming from Kansas City in the form of their lefty swinging firstbaseman "Marvelous Marv" Throneberry. He hit his 8th dinger of the season for the last place Athletics.

Whitey is having a terrible start to his 1961 season. In real life "The Chairman of the Board" logged a 25-4 mark and after five starts the little lefty is 1 and 3. Thusday he again was abushed by the Minnesota Twins and left giving up 7 runs. Yanks lost again and are struggling in the middle of the now ten team league. The Yankees are not pitching that well as a team as both pitchers that followed Ford, Jim Coates and "Rapid Ryne" Duren both were unimpressive. Duren so teed off "The Major" Ralph Houk, the Yankee skipper, that he is rumored to be headed somewhere else. Some have him going out west to join the newly formed Los Angeles Angels. Brooks Robinson had 2 base hits as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Los
Angeles Angels by the score of 2 to 0 at Wrigley Field.

Baltimore tallied 2 runs in the top of the 3rd inning. That early run support
was enough for Milt Pappas(3-0) and Baltimore. The pitchers took over after
the 3rd inning as neither team was able to score again.

Pappas was helped out by Hoyt Wilhelm who recorded his 3rd save. The losing
pitcher was Ken McBride(0-3). He surrendered 5 hits and 2 walks in 8
innings.

Don Mossi allowed Bob Scheffing to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game
as the Detroit Tigers outscored the Washington Senators 3 to 2.

The deciding run was scored by Detroit in the top of the 8th. Rocky Colavito
drew a walk. One out later, Steve Boros came to the plate and laid down a
sacrifice bunt. Dick Brown then delivered a one-base hit scoring the run.
Washington had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.

The win was credited to Mossi(3-1) who went the whole way allowing 2 runs. The
loss was charged to Bennie Daniels(1-2). He allowed 3 runs and 7 hits in 8
innings.

'Mossi just dominated us' losing pitcher Daniels said. 'Hopefully we can get
to him the next time around'

Right fielder Bob Allison rocketed 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI at Metropolitan
Stadium as the Minnesota Twins beat the New York Yankees 10 to 8.

Allison had a big day at the plate. He belted a three-run homer in the 1st
inning and smashed a solo-shot out of the park (his 2nd of the season) in the
5th inning. Due to a poorly pitched ballgame, scoring in 6 different innings
was still not enough for New York to come away with the victory.

Ted Sadowski(2-1) was the winner allowing no runs in 2/3 of an inning. Ray
Moore earned his 2nd save. Whitey Ford(1-3) was tagged with the loss. He
was knocked around by Minnesota, allowing 7 hits and 3 walks in 3 and 2/3
innings.

Earl Averill smacked 2 homeruns as the Los Angeles Angels topped the Baltimore
Orioles by a score of 10 to 4 at Wrigley Field.

Averill had a big evening at the plate. He hit a 'grand salami' to the
delight of his teammates in the 1st inning, hit a single in the 2nd inning,
cracked a solo homerun (his 4th of the season) in the 4th inning and slapped
a one-base hit in the 7th inning. Los Angeles and Baltimore each finished
the night with 11 hits.

Ron Kline(1-2) went 7 innings allowing 4 runs for the win. Chuck Estrada(0-1)
was tagged with the loss. 'I've spent a lot of time in the cage and made
some adjustments and they've paid off,' Averill said. 'I just take the same
approach up there. I don't overanalyze it. I go up there, see the ball and
try to put a good swing on it.'

Marv Throneberry cracked 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI at Municipal Stadium where
the Kansas City Athletics beat the Boston Red Sox 14 to 12.

Throneberry enjoyed a great evening at the plate. Every time he came up in
the latter innings, the crowd was on their feet cheering. He popped a
two-run clout over the fence in the 2nd inning, belted a three-run homer (his
6th of the season) in the 3rd inning and delivered a one-base hit in the 7th
inning. The game was a wild affair with the lead changing hands 5 times.

Bill Kunkel(1-0) went 2 innings allowing 1 run for the victory. The losing
pitcher was Ted Wills(1-1) in relief. He surrendered 1 hit and no walks in
1/3 of an inning.

Pedro Ramos tossed a complete game at Metropolitan Stadium as the Minnesota
Twins staged a comeback win over the New York Yankees by the count of 6 to
5.

Minnesota came up with the deciding runs in the 9th inning with 2 runs using 2
hits. After an out was recorded, Lenny Green started the rally when he
singled. Harmon Killebrew got his turn next, but he was a strikeout victim.
Jim Lemon then smashed a two-run homer (his 3rd of the season) resulting in a
mighty exciting win for Minnesota and the 10,343 home town fans in
attendance. Minnesota managed 7 in their victory.

The win was credited to Ramos(3-2) who went the whole way allowing 5 runs. Bob
Turley(1-1) absorbed the loss. Sam Mele was all smiles after the ballgame,
'It sure was looking pretty dim there for a while, but our guys never gave up
- and neither did our fans - they kept cheering us on. What a sweet win!'

Cal McLish came through with a solid 9 innings at Municipal Stadium as the
Chicago White Sox beat the Cleveland Indians 2 to 0.

McLish(3-0) looked very much in control throughout the night. He didn't allow
much, just 6 hits and no walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 2.28.
Chicago managed only 5 on the night.

Jim Perry(0-3) was tagged with the loss. He pitched 7 and 2/3 innings and
surrendered 5 hits and 1 walk. Jimmy Dykes was obviously impressed with the
pitching of McLish, 'That guy made us look a little silly out there tonight.
We just couldn't get to him at all - everything was working for him. I just
hope that he got that kinda performance out of his system.'

Gene Green left the yard and had 2 RBI and Joe McClain whitewashed Detroit as
the Washington Senators topped the Detroit Tigers by a score of 2 to 0 at
Griffith Stadium.

McClain(2-2) put on a good performance. He allowed only 5 hits and 4 walks in
9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 2.13 to 1.57. Neither team managed to
score after the 2nd inning.

Frank Lary(3-2) was the losing pitcher. He allowed 2 runs and 8 hits in 8
innings.

Two hi-lites from todays action are Jim "Mudcat" Grant winning his 4th game of the season, shuting out Chisox and Roger Maris hit his 9th homerun of the season for the Yankees. Both front runners, the White Sox and Tigers were beaten today so the rest of the league, Cleveland inparticular made up some ground on the league leaders.

Brooks Robinson hit 2 doubles as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Los Angeles
Angels by a score of 9 to 4.

Los Angeles was unable to claim the lead after Baltimore went ahead in the 3rd
inning when they tallied 2 runs on 2 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided
by Jim Gentile who helped quiet the crowd when he cracked a two-run shot (his
6th of the season). For the game Baltimore out-hit Los Angeles 13 to 10.

Dick Hall(3-2) picked up the victory, allowing 4 runs in 8 and 2/3 innings.
Eli Grba(3-1) was charged with the loss. Baltimore scored big getting 6 runs
off him in 3 innings.

Boston jumped out to the early lead in the first inning when they tallied 2
runs on 4 hits. Kansas City threatened in the 9th but their rally came up
short.

Mike Fornieles(3-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 3 and 1/3 innings and
allowing 2 runs. Chet Nichols was credited with his 1st save. Bud Daley(0-3)
was hit with the loss. He was unable to control the Boston offense and
allowed 10 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings.

Mudcat Grant came through with a solid 9 innings as the Cleveland Indians
defeated the Chicago White Sox by the score of 6 to 0 at Municipal
Stadium.

Chicago was unable to recover after Cleveland went ahead in the bottom of the
4th inning scoring a single run. Cleveland banged out 10 on the night.

It was the 2nd shutout of the year for Grant(4-0). Early Wynn(1-2) took the
loss. He allowed 9 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings.

Tom Sturdivant pitched a 3 hitter at Griffith Stadium where the Washington
Senators beat the Detroit Tigers by the score of 5 to 1.

of 4 hits. The highlight belonged to Matty Keough who thrilled the crowd
when he lined a base-hit which was good for two runs. Washington had a total
of 9 hits for the game.

The winning pitcher was Sturdivant(1-0) who allowed 1 run for the game. Jim
Bunning(1-1) was the loser. He gave up 6 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings.

Right fielder Roger Maris went yard as the New York Yankees topped the
Minnesota Twins by a score of 6 to 1 at Metropolitan Stadium.

New York claimed the early lead in the first inning scoring a single run using
3 hits. New York banged out 7 on the afternoon.

The victory went to Art Ditmar(1-1) who went 5 and 1/3 innings, allowing 1
run. Ditmar got relief help from Jim Coates who gained credit for his 2nd
save. Camilio Pascual(2-2) was tagged with the loss. By surrending 5 runs
in 7 innings his ERA jumped from 2.41 to 3.51.

The New York ballclub's record now stands at 8-7. With the loss, the
Minnesota ballclub's record is 6-11.
