The hotest pitcher in the Amercian League for 1961 is Jim "Mudcat" Grant. He just threw his third consecutive shutout white-washing the Washington Nats 4-0. It was the "Cats" fifth win of the season against zero defeats. In other action from Sunday May 7th, the Detroit Tigers took over sole possession of first place with a double header sweep of the previously in first place Chicago White Sox by the scores of 5-1 and 15-9. Other highlights were Roger Maris hitting his league leading 11th homerun for the Yankees, who find themselves looking up at five other clubs playing better then five hundred ball. With the victory the Yankees even their mark at ten and ten. Another power surge is found coming from Kansas City in the form of their lefty swinging firstbaseman "Marvelous Marv" Throneberry. He hit his 8th dinger of the season for the last place Athletics.
