Mudcat Grant shut down the Baltimore batters on just 2 hits as the Cleveland
Indians defeated the Baltimore Orioles by a score of 6 to 0 at Memorial
Stadium.

Grant(3-0) was indeed brilliant as he hand-cuffed the Baltimore offense. He
gave up just 2 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings improving his ERA from 2.81 to
1.80. Cleveland totaled 12 on the night.

The losing pitcher was Jack Fisher(0-2). When questioned about his
counterpart after the game, Fisher was lavish in his praise, 'It was obvious
very early on that we were going to be in for a long night. Grant brought
his 'A' game with him - he had good stuff and was able to spot it perfectly.
He probably only made one or two bad pitches the entire game!

Jake Wood left the yard and had 2 RBI and Don Mossi pitched 9 strong innings
as the Detroit Tigers defeated the New York Yankees 4 to 1 at Tiger
Stadium.

New York never recovered after Detroit took the lead in the bottom of the 4th
inning when they tallied 2 runs on 2 hits. The highlight belonged to Wood
who brought the crowd to their feet when he popped a two-run clout over the
fence (his 2nd of the season). Detroit had a total of 7 hits for the game.

Mossi(2-1) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 1 run. Whitey
Ford(1-2) was the losing pitcher. Although losing the contest, he whiffed 10
batters in 7 innings.

'I thought it was my best performance in a long time,' said Mossi. 'I had good
command early in the game. I had my control and composure and everything went
well.'

Bill Monbouquette took a no-hitter into the 6th inning as the Boston Red Sox
topped the Washington Senators by a score of 6 to 5 at Fenway Park.

Ted Wills(1-0) came through for Pinky Higgins with an excellent relief stint.
No one got on base in his perfect 1/3 of an inning. The right-handed
Monbouquette had his no-hit bid broken up by Chet Boak who singled with
nobody out in the 6th inning. Boston totaled 10 on the afternoon.

Wills was helped out by Mike Fornieles who recorded his 2nd save. Dave
Sisler(0-1) was the loser in relief. He was the victim of a defensive lapse
and did not allow an earned run in the game.
