First baseman Roy Sievers had 2 base hits and Billy Pierce went 9 strong
innings as the Chicago White Sox defeated the Washington Senators by a score
of 3 to 1 at Comiskey Park.

Chicago did all of it's offensive work in the 4th inning when they scored 3
runs on 4 hits. The big moment was provided by Al Smith who thrilled the
crowd when he popped a two-run clout over the fence (his 1st of the season).
Chicago banged out 7 on the afternoon.

Pierce(1-0), allowing 1 run for the game, picked up the victory. Ed
Hobaugh(0-1) was the loser. He pitched 3 innings allowing 4 hits and 2
walks.

When questioned about his counterpart after the game, Hobaugh was lavish in
his praise, 'It was obvious very early on that we were going to be in for a
long night. Pierce brought his 'A' game with him - he had good stuff and was
able to spot it perfectly. He probably only made one or two bad pitches the
entire game!

Stadium.

The game was deadlocked at 5 after nine full innings. Finally, Cleveland
pulled the game out in the 10th inning. The highlight belonged to Phillips
who electrified Municipal Stadium when he electrified the crowd with a Grand
Slam home run (his 1st of the season). Cleveland had 13 hits for the
afternoon.

Wynn Hawkins(1-0) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the win. Jim Donohue(1-1)
was tagged with the loss in relief. He allowed 2 hits and 2 walks in 1/3 of
