slimmest of margins, 4 to 3.

Milt Pappas(1-0) contributed a pedestrian performance to earn the win. He
allowed 5 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings and surrendered 2 homeruns.
Cleveland threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.

Pappas was helped out by Hoyt Wilhelm who recorded his 1st save. Jim

innings.

Homeruns- R.Maris-2(4th), M.Mantle(4th)

Roger Maris ripped 2 homeruns and scored 3 times as the New York Yankees beat
the Detroit Tigers by a score of 4 to 2.

Maris had a good day at the plate. He ripped a solo home run in the 1st
inning, blasted a solo shot (his 4th of the season) in the 3rd inning and
lashed a single in the 8th inning. New York had just 6 hits for the
afternoon.

The win went to Bob Turley(1-0) who allowed no runs in 5 innings. Bill
Stafford recorded the save, his 1st. Frank Lary(2-1) was given the loss. He
was touched for 3 homeruns in his 7 innings of work.

'I just wanted to give my team a chance to win.' said Turley, 'I got burned on
a couple of pitches. But we won the game, and that's all that matters.'
