First baseman Vic Wertz had 2 base hits and 2 RBI at Fenway Park as the Boston
Red Sox beat the Los Angeles Angels by the count of 4 to 3.

Los Angeles lost it in the 8th inning when Boston did all their damage when
they tallied 4 runs on 2 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Wertz who
made the Boston fans a happy lot when he slapped a one-base hit scoring two
baserunners. Los Angeles had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.

Mike Fornieles(1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings.
Fornieles got help from Tracy Stallard who earned his 1st save. Ron
Moeller(0-1) was the loser in relief.

The Kansas City Athletics had an easy time of it at Yankee Stadium defeating
the New York Yankees by a score of 11 to 5.

In the top of the 2nd inning Kansas City went on top for good when they scored
3 runs on 3 hits. Kansas City out-hit New York for the game, 19 hits to 9.

Jerry Walker(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 and 2/3 innings and
allowing 5 runs. Whitey Ford(0-1) was tagged with the loss. He got hit hard,
allowing 11 hits and 4 walks in 5 innings.
