Games of Friday, April 28th, 1961

Dick Howser is showing off his offensive skills in the young season. Howser, a slick fielding base thief, is batting .500 so far and that leads the league. He has 25 hits in 50 at bats. Earl Battey is keeping it up as he drilled his 5th homer in three days to tie Roger Maris for the league leadership in that category. Battey is batting .440 over his last ten games. The White Sox rallied for three runs in the last two innings and beat the A's 7-6. They remain in the lead with their 9-2 mark. In other news, usually sure handed Brooks Robinson booted a ground ball that gave the Washington Senators the game in the bottom of the nineth...is that a "Walk off error"?

NEWSPAPER GAME STORIES FOR 1961 American League Date: 4/29/1961

CHICAGO AT KANSAS CITY
White Sox....... 1 0 0 1 0 2 0 1 2 - 7 10 1
Athletics....... 0 1 3 0 2 0 0 0 0 - 6 13 1
Win:Staley(1-0) Loss:Keegan(0-1)
Homeruns- N.Fox(1st), M.Minoso(3rd), A.Carey(1st)

Roy Sievers had 2 base hits at Municipal Stadium as the streaking Chicago
White Sox pulled off a dramatic comeback beating the Kansas City Athletics by
the count of 7 to 6.

Chicago came up with the deciding runs in the top of the 9th inning with 2
runs utilizing 3 base hits. Luis Aparicio led off and started the rally when
he doubled. After another out, Jim Landis came up and he hit a sacrifice fly
plating a run. Sievers then stroked a single. Rivera then stole second
base. Minnie Minoso stepped into the box and drew a walk. Al Smith kept the
inning going and smacked a single scoring the final run of the inning.
Kansas City had 13 hits in the game while Chicago had 10, but Chicago had the
more timely hits.

The win was credited to Gerry Staley(1-0) who went 2 innings allowing no runs.
Ed Keegan(0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. He allowed 2 runs and 2
hits in 2/3 of an inning.

After the game, it took a long while before Joe Gordon emerged from his
office. In a subdued tone he answered only a couple of questions. He
concluded with, 'Fellows, sorry I'm not in a very talkative mood tonight, as
I think you'll understand. I'm sure you'll find the banter a lot more
light-hearted over in the Chicago locker room.'

BALTIMORE AT WASHINGTON
Orioles......... 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 2 0 - 4 8 1
Senators........ 1 0 0 3 0 0 0 0 1 - 5 5 0
Win:Sisler(1-1) Loss:Stock(0-2)

In a dramatic ending at Griffith Stadium the Washington Senators won in their
last at-bat beating the Baltimore Orioles by the count of 5 to 4.

The game was won by Washington with a run in the bottom of the 9th inning.
Jim King doubled. Joe Hicks followed, but he was set down on strikes. One
out later, Matty Keough stepped up to the plate and he was walked
intentionally. Wes Stock then threw a pitch that the catcher muffed. Chet
Boak stepped into the box and reached on an error giving Washington the
victory and sending the 6,725 home-town fans home happy. Washington won
despite being out-hit by Baltimore 8 hits to 5.

The victory went to Dave Sisler(1-1) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs.
Stock(0-2) was given the loss in relief. It was a tough loss for him as he
did not allow an earned run in his 1 and 2/3 innings of work.

The Washington ballclub's record now stands at 6-7. With the loss, Baltimore
has a record of 4-6 lately, 5-8 overall.

Homeruns- L.Green(1st), E.Battey(5th), P.Ramos(1st)

Lenny Green had 4 hits and 2 RBI and Pedro Ramos held Los Angeles to 3 hits at
Wrigley Field as the Minnesota Twins beat the Los Angeles Angels by the count
of 5 to 1.

Ramos(2-2) was indeed brilliant as he hand-cuffed the Los Angeles offense. He
allowed only 3 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings improving his ERA from 3.46 to
2.83. Minnesota managed 15 in their victory.

Ron Kline(0-2) was tagged with the loss. 'Ramos gave us exactly what we
needed tonight,' Sam Mele said. 'When he threw the fastball he threw it for
strikes. They were really fooled by his change. Most of the time he had
them chasing it.'
