Cal McLish(2-0) and Bill Monbouquette(1-1) locked horns in a pitcher's duel
with McLish and the Chicago White Sox coming out on top of the Boston Red Sox
2 to 0.

McLish gave a fine effort for Chicago. He allowed 6 hits and 3 walks in 6 and
1/3 innings lowering his ERA to 0.64. The pitchers took over after the 4th
inning as neither team was able to score again.

McLish got help from Turk Lown who earned his 1st save.

CLEVELAND AT KANSAS CITY

Mudcat Grant completed the game without help from the bullpen at Municipal
Stadium as the Cleveland Indians beat the Kansas City Athletics 7 to
2.

Bubba Phillips had a big day against Kansas City. He doubled which was good
for two runs in the 1st inning, delivered a single in the 3rd inning and
tripled scoring two baserunners in the 4th inning. Cleveland finished with
12 hits in the victory.

The winning pitcher was Grant(2-0) who allowed 2 runs for the game. Ray
Herbert(0-2) took the loss. He was knocked around, surrendering 5 runs in 3
innings.

Don Mossi completed the game without help from the bullpen at Tiger Stadium
where the Detroit Tigers beat the Los Angeles Angels 13 to 4.

Dick Brown provided much of the offense. He smashed a two-run homer (his 2nd
of the season) in the 2nd inning, banged out a single which was good for two
runs in the 6th inning and laced a base-hit in the 8th inning. Detroit had a
total of 17 hits for the game.

The victory was credited to Mossi(1-1) who went the distance, allowing 4 runs.
Jerry Casale(0-2) was the losing pitcher. He was touched for 8 hits and 2
walks in 3 and 2/3 innings.

In a thriller the New York Yankees staged a dramatic comeback then held on to
win over the Baltimore Orioles by a score of 3 to 2 at Memorial Stadium.

New York came up with the deciding runs in the top of the 9th inning scoring 2
runs utilizing 2 base hits. Bill Skowron opened up the inning nicely when he
slapped a base-hit. One out later, Roger Maris got his turn next, but he was
a strikeout victim. Clete Boyer then doubled. Yogi Berra was up next and he
was walked intentionally to load the bases. Hoyt Wilhelm then threw a wild
pitch scoring a run. Wilhelm then threw one that got by the catcher for a
passed ball scoring the final run of the inning. New York finished with just
6 hits in the victory.

The win went to Whitey Ford(1-1) who allowed 2 runs in 8 innings. Luis Arroyo
recorded the save, his 1st. Steve Barber(1-1) took the loss.

Paul Richards was not very talkative after his team's tough loss. 'I'm not in
the mood for questions, but I'm sure Ralph Houk will be glad to talk about
the game as long as you have questions to ask.'

Camilio Pascual had a strong outing as the Minnesota Twins defeated the
Washington Senators by a score of 3 to 2 at Metropolitan
Stadium.

Pascual(2-0) contributed a very nicely pitched game. He gave up just 4 hits
and 1 walk in 8 innings. Washington made it exciting in the 9th, but they
were unable to push the needed runs across.

Ray Moore gained credit for his 1st save. Joe McClain(0-2) was the losing
pitcher. 'Fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals' said Mickey Vernon after
the game. 'We lost this game today because we didn't follow the instructions
every Little Leaguer hears every day.'
